Dear theWeather Club e-newsletter readers,
Welcome to Issue 21 of theWeather Club e-newsletter!
Winter ended on a rather cold, blustery and snowy note in the UK and parts of Europe, with blizzards, freezing rain and sub-zero temperatures, the likes of which we haven’t seen for many years – all thanks to a Sudden Stratospheric Warming event, which you can learn about in our podcast. In the research news section we explore the first direct proof that the Global effort to repair the zone hole is succeeding, and look at the Met Office’s new initiative to better understand regional terms for weather. Peter Gibbs introduces us to the world of forecasting winter road conditions and how gritting companies use these forecast in our video, and we take a look at the new, upgraded Met Office radar network in weather watch. In order to make us feel a little warmer, the travellers’ guide takes us on a journey to sunny Mallorca, whilst we learn all about climate modelling in the science lesson. And finally, our guest authors delve into weather and climate communication and Liz Bentley takes a look back at her career.
I am about to go on maternity leave, so for the next 12 months I am leaving theWeather Club in the hands of a new Editor, but I look forward to returning to the role in 2019, and to seeing how theWeather Club has grown in that time!
Happy reading :)
