Dear theWeather Club e-newsletter readers,
Welcome to Issue 22 of theWeather Club e-newsletter.
Summer has certainly arrived in the UK with the current heatwave we are experiencing across the country! We hope you are all managing to stay cool and wearing plenty of sunscreen. Don’t forget to keep your lovely plants and animals cool and watered too. We have been working with the Royal Horticultural Society this year hosting our joint event called ‘Gardening in a Changing Climate’ in locations across the UK. In this season’s newsletter we will take a look back at Paul Hardaker’s experience of what his garden can tell us about climate.
In the research news section, we explore the weakening of North Atlantic circulation and what is causing it. We take a further look into what is El Niño - Southern Oscillation. Professor Liz Bentley sits down to interview Adam Scaife, Head of Long Range Prediction at the Met Office and Professor at Exeter University, about El Niño and La Niña. This addition we are exploring extreme weather topics such as an account of the history of storm chasing by experienced storm chaser Cammi Czuchnicki. We look at what caused a blanket of orange snow in parts of Eastern Europe earlier this year and what happens when you experience -30°C and 30°C in one day by our very own Caroline Coch. We hope you enjoy reading these stories and more in theWeather Club e-newsletter -Summer 2018.
Tara Thompson will be our new Editor while Catherine is on maternity leave. Along with her colleague, Caroline Coch, they look forward to an exciting year ahead working with theWeather Club!
