Parts of southern Africa have been devastated by Cyclone Idai over the last week. The tropical storm has been described as the worst weather-related disaster to hit the southern hemisphere, with over 2 million people affected by extreme widespread flooding.

The Indian Ocean has already experienced seven cyclones this year, the average usually being three. Winds of up to 105 mph and flooding from a storm surge swept across areas of southern Africa including Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. The amount of rainfall from tropical storms is increasing due to climate change, and storm surges are more severe because of sea level rises. Authors of the IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C warming presented at a Royal Meteorological Society and Grantham Institute event ‘How to avoid the worst effects of climate change’.
